Tactility Factory is an innovative design and manufacturing company that mainstreams tactility in the built environment. Our aim is to make hard surfaces soft. We have developed technology that allows us to integrate textile and textile techniques onto the surfaces of concrete. This results in a range of innovative products and processes that can be used in a variety of contexts. We are currently exploiting the patented technology as high-end bespoke wall coverings (surface mounted) but we are also interested in applying the technology to mass produced ‘skins’ that are integrated onto precast structural elements (underside of floor slabs, walls, balconies etc) in fast track, low cost construction. Our surfaces are unique and award winning (numerous Innovation awards and runner-up in Home and Gardens 2011 Design award for Fabric, Flooring and Wallpaper Category). We were also shortlisted for the RIBA president's award for research, in the category: RIBA President's Award for Outstanding University-located Research. People typically remark ‘we have never seen anything like this’, but in fact, Tactility Factory is building off familiar and in some cases, age-old, technologies that have been developed and used locally in the textile industry and concrete industry in Northern Ireland. We are simply continuing existing ‘lineages’ by cross programming technologies and cultures to make something completely new!
