www.scalararchitecture.comscalar Architecture is an award winning international design firm based in New York City and Spain. Its principal, Julio Salcedo, studied undergraduate architecture and sculpture at Rice University; he completed his architecture studies at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. The firm engages issues of program, geometry and architecture’s relation to the larger context. Some illustrative projects are the ongoing redevelopment of Hamar, Norway, Casa Lasso in Santander, Spain; ‘Recess’, a chain of new restaurants in US cities; and proposals for Madrid’s Olympic Village and a new regional park in Madrid. Current ongoing projects include residential projects in Maine, Zaragoza and New York City; an urban train station proposal for Hamar, Norway in collaboration with Barcelona urbanist Marc Brossa; the Woodstock Artist Association Museum; and a hotel in Lahore, Pakistan. In 2006, scalar Architecture was selected from a large pool of American, Mexican and Canadian candidates as a Young Architects Award recipient from the Architectural League. The firm was a finalist in the international Elemental Chile housing competition and was named “America’s Top Young Designers” in House Beautiful Magazine. Additionally, scalar Architecture, in collaboration with Brossa, won the international competition for a new urban district in Hamar, Norway. Prior to founding scalar Architecture, Salcedo’s experience includes working for Pritzker price winner Rafael Moneo and as the senior designer for SOM’s Columbus Circle Time Warner Center – a mixed used building comprised of residences, offices, a hotel and a shopping center. The work of the firm has been published in Arquitectura, Abstract, The Architect’s Newspaper, Architectural Record, Breathe, House Beautiful, and Interior Design Magazine.
