The Bernal Institute hosts a multidisciplinary team of world-leading materials scientists and engineers at UL. Bernal research focuses on the synthesis (making), characterisation (measuring) and design (inventing) of nano, meso and macro structured materials. Bernal strives for its research to be disruptive and to deliver transformative solutions that will change forever the way society and industry operate. Bernal represents a €100m+ investment in world-class characterisation, modelling and manufacturing facilities concentrated in 20,000 m of high quality research space. Efforts to harness Bernal’s research strengths led to the establishment of four research clusters. Bernal’s four research clusters are: • Molecular & Nano Materials (MOL) • Bio Materials (BIO) • Composite Materials (COMP) • Process Engineering (PROC) We host 3 national translational research Centres: SFI’s Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC), and Enterprise Ireland’s Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC) and the Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC).
