The Los Angeles Maritime Institute serves to empower youth to discover their greater potential through extraordinary at-sea experiences. We envision a thriving community where every young person can look to the future with confidence. The Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing Character-Building, Educational, Sail Training Adventures for Youth aboard the twin brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson. At their launch in 2002, the twin brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson were designated the Official Tall Ships and Maritime Ambassadors of the City of Los Angeles. Measuring 110 feet, these identical wooden tall ships were named after Captain Irving and Exy Johnson, sail training pioneers and seven-time circumnavigators with youth crew. They are the only twin brigantines in the world. LAMI's award-winning TopSail Youth Program is an education and adventure experience aboard a tall ship consisting of day sails, overnight voyages, or both. Skills gained include team-building, problem-solving, decision-making, planning, self-reliance and leadership.
