Urban Sexuality Lab at Drexel University
www.urbansexualitylab.comWe are a unique research group hosted by the Department of Sociology at Drexel University addressing a broad ranging of pressing issues related to urban sociology and sexuality studies. The lab functions through a unique shared-governance structure in which students ranging from first-year undergraduates to PhD candidates actively take leadership roles on projects, including planning, grant writing, executing research steps, and publishing. The environment is extremely supportive and collaborative – although different titles are held, ideas are shared easily among multiple ongoing projects, embracing unique skills, experiences, and backgrounds. In addition to their variety of educational levels, lab members create an interdisciplinary research environment by coming from different disciplines including sociology, public health, economics, and history. At any given time, the lab has multiple projects in various stages of development from brainstorming ideas, to data collection, to preparing manuscripts for publication. The Urban Sexuality Lab is breaking norms in the world of academic research, providing community for queer and ally student researchers, and advancing critical scholarship to support LGBTQ+ communities broadly.
