Abraço Campeão (Embracing Champions)
www.abracocampeao.comFounded by Alan Duarte, Abraço Campeão (Embracing Champions) is a Brazilian NGO that combines martial arts with alternative education to help young people make positive decisions in life. Alan lost 10 close family members to armed violence. He doesn't want to see this happen to anyone else. With minimal support and working within a conflict zone, Alan and his team saw the project grow from 10 members to over 250. The team currently works 6 days a week to provide: Boxing and wrestling lessons for children and youth Sessions personal development twice a month, addressing a variety of topics relevant to local youth, including gender awareness, sexuality and racism Youth leadership through the “Generation of Champions” - a group of elected youth representing the voice of participants cultural Community events - from boxing shows to parties Mentoring for young people in greatest need and difficulty. School reinforcement Through these activities, we aim to: Expand the perspective of life of our young people, giving them the opportunity to dream beyond the typical life of the youth of Complexo do Alemão. Through sport, develop important skills such as anger management, discipline, self-control, respect and constructive contact with youth and adults. Support young people in the complicated transition between elementary and high school. Encourage youth leadership through the Champion Generation. Provide a safe and welcoming leisure place with values of peace and inclusion. Encourage the involvement of young parents and their families in their development.
