Modern Marimba started in October 2019 with a mission by co-founders Tihda Vongkoth and Michael Jones to curate concert music programs featuring the marimba, vibraphone, and other mallet percussion keyboards. Modern Marimba creates spaces to recognize, reflect, and amplify powerful ideas and experiences through sound – especially from the musical voices of living, formerly living, and collective people who have been marginalized throughout history. It seeks to connect with those who take responsibility and action in creating sustainable and equitable musical ecosystems: socially conscious audiences, composers, musicians, artisans, musical instrument manufacturers, performing artists, educators, and students/parents; organizations for justice and racial equity, foundations, and ethically conscious businesses, supporters and donors. We are all in this together. Modern Marimba, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, also provides educational programs for young people in Southwest Florida, where it hopes to inspire and support future generations of creative and empathetic humans. Through interviews on social media, it also supports and recognizes many of today’s figures in music.
