The Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) is a professionally independent scientific institution of the non-profit Foundation Stiftung für Qualität und Wirtschaftlichkeit im Gesundheitswesen. The Institute's task is to review the advantages and disadvantages of medical services for patients. It produces professionally independent, evidence-based expert opinions, for example, on drugs, non-drug treatments, methods of diagnosis and early detection, and treatment guidelines and disease management programs. The staff systematically search for and evaluate studies that can answer the initial question of the expert opinion. In doing so, they proceed according to the internationally recognized standards of evidence-based medicine. IQWiG makes the results of its work available to the public on its website under Projects. Among other things, they serve as a basis for decision-making by the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA). In addition, IQWiG publishes generally understandable health information for all citizens on the website www.gesundheitsinformation.de. On the IQWiG platform ThemenCheck Medizin, citizens can suggest topics that should be investigated scientifically. Experts then process the selected topics in so-called Health Technology Assessment or HTA reports, i.e. health technology assessments. The results are to be used in decisions about health care. The institute also participates in international projects to further develop evidence-based medicine, for example as part of EU programs. Medical advice is not one of IQWiG's tasks. For legal reasons, IQWiG staff are not permitted to answer questions about individual cases of illness or treatment or about reimbursement by health insurance funds.
