The Borders Book Festival has established itself as a key national literary and arts event. From an audience of just 400 in 2004, it now draws some 34,000 visitors to the magical Harmony Garden and its orchard in Melrose each year. Tranquil herbaceous borders, apple trees and greenhouses are suddenly transformed by flags and banners, tents and marquees, bars and café’s, a bookshop and ticket office, hospitality and VIP areas, all producing a tsunami of sounds from standing ovations to children’s laughter as performers, buskers and entertainers mingle with the crowds.
