Droplet Lab is revolutionizing the way we quantify the physical properties of surfaces. With a mission to make the measurement of surface tension and contact angle a more practical, mobile, and cost-efficient task, the company has engineered a smartphone enabled surface tensiometer, the Dropometer, entirely circumventing the need for bulky and expensive hardware. Comprised of an App that runs on a smartphone as a standalone system, as well as associated add-on hardware, the instrument has been shown to match, and in some cases outdo, the performance of the top-of-the-line traditional measurement tools. Founded in 2018 by Professor Alidad Amirfazil and his graduate students (Dr. Huanchen Chen and Dr. Jesus L. Muros -Cobos), Droplet Lab is committed to making the surface tensiometer a much more widely accessible and energy efficient tool. Droplet Lab has received several awards, including a $125,000 grant from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Idea to Innovation Program.
