The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) is the oldest and largest member based NGO dedicated to the biodiversity conservation in Bulgaria. It is founded on 3 June 1988 and proved itself as a successful national-wide organisation. The BSPB achieves lasting conservation results following a long-term strategy and conservation programme. It is the Bulgarian Partner of BirdLife International. The BSPB is registered charity, civil non-for-profit Nature conservation organisation. It is officially registered in the list of the organisations, acting in favour of the society as a whole. BSPB is one of the few in Bulgaria NGOs with real membership and local structures throughout the country, a real grass-root organisation. The BSPB works for the Nature, defending its right to exist. BSPB is working for the people, defending the social interests and the right of everybody to have preserved Nature and healthy environment. Main achievements are linked to the establishment of SPAs of the Natura 2000 network in Bulgaria, contributing to biodiversity conservation legislation, development of agri-environmental measures for biodiversity, working with local people and authorities for the conservation of Bulgarian Nature and saving endangered species. The BPSB conservation work is science and evidence based. BSPB raises voice for the conservation of Nature and the sustainable well being of people. The BSPB established the first Nature Conservation Centers and is the first NGO to manage a protected area and a Ramsar Site in Bulgaria. The BSPB conservation work has been recognised in country and abroad and is the first ever winner of Henri Ford Conservation Award in Bulgaria, the first Natura 2000 Conservation Award by EC. Mission: BSPB works for the conservation of the wild birds, for the important for them sites and habitats, as well as for the biodiversity as a whole, and thus contributes for the sustainable use of natural resources and for the welfare of people.
