In 1947 Fr Werenfried van Straaten (the bacon Priest) founded Aid to the Church in Need. Today it has 600,000 benefactors in 16 countries. The organisation approves over 8,000 requests for aid annually from Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and the Third World. It has been granted the status of a Universal Public Association by the Holy See. A Catholic Charity dependent on the Holy See, providing pastoral relief to needy and oppressed churches.
