With a young, multinational, and highly-educated population, the city is a rapidly changing centre of political, financial, and cultural influence — a living laboratory for innovation. As a design-based school in Calgary, we offer an immersive experience in social innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. At the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (SAPL), architects, landscape architects and planners reconcile priorities through multiple lenses: built-natural, historical-technological, cultural-social, financial-political, and physical-digital. Through these different frames, our students don't just learn to be bold in creation, but to apply design thinking to modern challenges in the digital, social justice, and environmental sustainability spaces. Studio-based learning provides an exceptional hands-on research experience and community-centered education. Our distinctive interdisciplinary approach cultivates strong industry and government partnerships well-suited to practice in our complex, urbanizing world.
