University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Graduate School
www.uwm.eduOffering more than 135 graduate degrees and certificates, we combine our faculty expertise with the professional connections that are possible only in the career, research and cultural capital of Wisconsin. Our alumni lead in key fields, and tell us what skills new graduates need to succeed in laboratories, lecture halls, boardrooms, classrooms and beyond. Along with just 119 other colleges and universities across the United States, UWM is one of those select top research universities in the Carnegie classification’s highest research activity category, also known as R1. Few of the more than 4,600 academic institutions in the U.S. will receive the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education “highest research activity” designation, the gold standard for assessment. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is one of only two universities in the state that has earned this rating for a research institution. Top research status is coveted among institutions that value excellence in cutting-edge research, forming strategic partnerships and integrating research across a broad curriculum. UWM faculty, staff, administrators and students have worked toward this recognition for decades, demonstrating research excellence in laboratories and libraries, lecture halls and at international conferences. Carnegie’s designation is not an end point, but signals an evolution – one possible only through the research, foresight and determination of our university community.
