Founded in 1946 as a college of foreign languages, Nanzan University has grown into one of the most prestigious universities in the Tokai region. The addition through the years of new faculties, departments and research centers has not changed the basic purpose and thrust of Nanzan education — to provide an education rooted in Christian values across all fields of knowledge. From modest beginnings as a College of Foreign Languages in 1946, Nanzan took the small step to a single Faculty of Arts and Letters in 1949 and has since grown into a fully-fledged university with a worldwide reputation for academic excellence. With the addition in April 2000 of the Faculty of Policy Studies and the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences and Information Engineering (2009 name change to Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering) at the campus at Seto, and with the integration of Nanzan Junior College in April 2011, the University now has eight faculties.
