History Abounds
www.katetilleytailoring.comI am: - an Historical Interpreter - presenting well researched, authentically costumed first person interpretations of women from Jamestown Adventurers to Suffragettes whose voices and stories have become dimmed. - an Historical Seamstress - with experience drafting and assembling garments for Colonial Williamsburg, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, several theater companies, and individual reenactors. - a History Bounder - currently developing a line of clothing and accessories for men and woman inspired by historical portraiture and extant garments. I have a degree in Theatre from DeSales University where I focused on acting and costuming. After graduation I worked in costume shops for The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, People’s Light Theatre Company and Walnut Street Theatre when I wasn’t performing. In 2009 I turned my costuming attention to Historical Clothing and spent a few days a week with the Tailors of Colonial Williamsburg until 2011 - first as a volunteer and then in a paid internship. As a Historic Clothing Technician at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation for a total of four and a half years, I served as Mentor for new staff in the Historical Clothing Services Department, Team Leader for day to day activities at the Jamestown Settlement Costume Shop, and was named Employee of the Quarter three times. I was also the First Hand for Men’s and Women’s Clothing at the Costume Design Center of Colonial Williamsburg for one year. I then went on to portray a composite seamstress and Mrs. Shields in the Taverns of Colonial Williamsburg along with several roles in their Evening Programs. For the last three years I have done first person interpretations along with Colonial Dance and Historic Clothing presentations for companies including Road Scholar and Richmond Discoveries. With the #historybounding trend recently among historical costumers, I was inspired to create garments and accessories based portraits and original pieces.
