The children in her neighborhood were lacking in quality care while their parents worked. Two income households were commonplace in the black community long before the nation as a whole due to the struggle to make ends meet. Despite this there were no established methods of caring for the children while both parents worked. Helen herself struggled with finding care for her children. She arrEstablished in 1969, Tiny Tots Development Center (TTDC) provides childcare services, preschool, and early childhood education in a nurturing environment.anged care on a day-by-day basis determining who would watch her children based on who in her family or community was available to watch them. There was no consistency in the lives of her children, so she decided to provide it for them and for some of the other children in her community by opening a childcare center in her home. Today TTDC is run by two of Mrs. Hick’s daughters and has grown to four sites with a fifth opening at the Othello Square development this November. With partner community organizations, TTDC is able to provide a quality program to those who would not normally be able to afford it.
