That means making sure children have the resources and supports they need to build strong minds and bodies. But when children are exposed to chronic, toxic stressors such as abuse or neglect, the effects can be like constructing a building on a shaky foundation: these experiences can have negative, long-lasting health consequences. Preventing abuse and intervening early and effectively when abuse does occur are two important ways we can help children maintain or regain the stable foundation they need.
