The longstanding aim of the project is to support liberal democratic system by enhancing evidence-based public discussion. To reach this aim, Demagog.SK fact-checks factual statements made by politicians in TV and radio broadcast debates, press conferences or blogs, and thus unveil false and misleading claims they make, as well as provides correct information to public and media. Another project's goal is increasing analytical skills and internet literacy of young people either within the project or among general population. University students have a chance to improve their analytical skills, apply them in practice, and make an impact on political life in Slovakia, all via internship in Demagog.SK. Demagog.SK was founded by two Slovak students of political science at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, in March 2010. The project was inspired by PolitiFact.com (2009 Pulitzer Prize winner) and FactCheck.org, political fact-check projects monitoring public speeches and political campaigns in the US environment. Since the end of 2010, the project has been institutionally covered by Slovak Governance Institute (SGI) in Bratislava, which has been responsible for providing its organizational and financial needs, technical support and personal affairs. SGI is a non-profit, non-partisan think-tank, focusing on research on good governance and public policy, as well as activist and participation projects in this area.
