The Gay Polo League (GPL) is an athletic, adventurous, dedicated and fun loving group. GPL members represent a cross section of ages, abilities, professions and physical types. Some of us have been riding for years and some of us never sat on horse before joining the league. Our common ground lies in our shared desire to meet and engage with other gay men and women while enjoying the challenging and beautiful sport of Polo. We are the Gay Polo League. Yes, we are passionate about the game of Polo, the thrill of competition and the camaraderie that comes with it. GPL is about more than just fun and excitement – our goal is to make a positive impact on individual lives and our society at large. For many of us in the LBGT community, team sports were not an option growing up, whether it was out of fear, active discrimination or because that's "just how it was". There were no role models to show us how to be true to ourselves and athletes at the same time. Even today there are hushed stories of gay professional athletes who live in fear of losing their careers if their sexual orientation should come to light. The GPL is about setting an example of out gay professional athlete. We hope to inspire other athletes to come out – and be proud of who they are – while playing the sports they love. In a broader sense, we want to change the way people think about gay athletes and the gay community. The GPL is about helping the world understand that while our sexual orientation describes us, it doesn't define us – we are a viable and meaningful part of our society. And we'd love to have you along for the ride.
