The Supreme Court is a precedent court whose principal goal is clarification and development of the law within the framework provided by the Constitution, domestic legislation and Norway’s obligations under international conventions. The Supreme Court decides with final force and effect the legal relationship between the parties in cases brought before it. The Supreme Court’s interpretation of the law is also followed by other courts and by legal practitioners in general. Thus, the Supreme Court has decisive influence on applicable law in Norway. In principle, appeals in all types of cases may be brought before by the Supreme Court – in civil disputes, including administrative cases, and in criminal cases. The Supreme Court also deals with constitutional issues. This makes the Supreme Court our country’s highest constitutional court, administrative court, dispute tribunal and criminal court.
