The L.H. Baekeland Project, LLC

In 1907, Leo Hendrik Baekeland, a Belgian-born American chemist, made one of the most transformative discoveries of the 20th century: Bakelite. It was the first wholly synthetic plastic and it ushered in an explosion of new man-made materials that marked the beginnings of our modern industrial age. The L.H. Baekeland Project was established by Leo's great grandson, Hugh Karraker, to celebrate and promote Leo's achievements. The Project released “All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic” in 2018. It was shown at film festivals and won a Platinum Remi Award at WorldFest Houston before a successful run of over 500 broadcasts on national public television. Content from the film has been used internationally in various television broadcasts including STEM education programs and podcasts. June 2021, the film launched globally in over 100 countries/territories. It’s now available on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, AppleTV+, Google Play, YouTube, VUDU Domestic with English closed-captioning, and subtitles in Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. With the film as a tool, The Project’s mission is to reach worldwide audiences of students, professionals and the general public of all ages – interested in history, science, industry, entrepreneurship, engineering and design. Another goal is to spark interest and appreciation in those who’ve had no previous experience with these subjects. It intends to continue its role in the global debate about the political, social and ecological significance of chemistry and plastics, and encourage a new generation of innovators to find essential solutions to today’s plastics problems through action.
