Established in 1972, the National Vision Research Institute (NVRI) celebrates 50 years of vision research in 2022. NVRI oversees basic, clinical and translational vision research programs at the Australian College of Optometry , including the supervision of PhD and Honours students in association with university collaborators. These include The University of Melbourne, RMIT University, Monash University and Swinburne University of Technology. NVRI has a strong focus on visual neuro-engineering, carrying out research on neural development in the visual cortex, retinal physiology and translational research through its neuro-engineering laboratory. It’s been heavily involved in the development of bionic eye devices to restore vision in people with retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. Building on NVRI’s strengths in man-machine interfaces, it is part of an industry partnership with an Australian MedTech company, Carbon Cybernetics, developing neural implants. In 2019, NVRI partnered with the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at The University of Melbourne, to jointly fund a Clinical Research Fellowship to expand clinical research efforts. The successful initiative includes current collaborations with the Centre for Eye Research Australia and The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital. Together, the neuro-engineering and clinical research programs contribute to a strong, vibrant research environment with a highly regarded international reputation for vision research. NVRI has a strong track record of publication in high ranking scientific and medical journals and in attracting both federal and philanthropic research grants. Funding from the Australian Research Council and National Health & Medical Research Council provide investment into the research programs along with philanthropic funding. The Victorian Lions Foundation and Lions Vision Research Fund are also long-time supporters, providing funds for a post-doctoral research fellowship.
