Scrap Arts Music
www.scrapartsmusic.comWhimsy of Dr. Seuss + Flash Gordon meets musicality of Zappa, Stravinsky + Glennie! Invented instruments + original performance, touring the globe since 2001! Scrap Arts Music is a Canadian company that creates innovative musical performances with self-made mobile instruments, rhythmically-rich compositions, and high-energy action-choreography. Directors Gregory Kozak and Justine Murdy began their collaboration in 1998, creating signature musical experiences with 145+, one-of-a-kind sculptural instruments on wheels artfully assembled from recycled and salvaged materials. Whether performing before thousands on world stages, providing impactful educational outreach to all ages, or adding ‘wow factor’ to prestigious corporate and special events, like the Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Scrap Arts Music can be relied upon as “super professional, super fun!” (Sandy Robertson, UCSB). Scrap Arts Music is deeply rooted in an eco-friendly sensibility: all their instruments are handmade from industrial scraps. They are often compared to STOMP and Blue Man Group, since those groups use everyday materials to produce sound. But Scrap Arts Music’s philosophy is a bit different – insisting on building full-blown artistic instruments from literal pieces of scrap, each instrument is a one-of-a-kind creation that doubles as both music-maker and artistic sculpture. Scrap Arts Music is currently touring an all-new production called "Children of Metropolis". Gregory Kozak recently recalled: "After an almost unrelenting decade of touring the world, I wanted more flexibility in the sonic and emotional range of the music I created. Our shows were always filled with fun and invention, and I’ve never wanted to lose that, but I also wanted to deepen the quality and personality of what Scrap Arts Music is. I’ve created new instruments and they sound beautiful. The new music is playful and beautiful, and our youthful, energetic ensemble inspires me deeply."
