The Academy of Fine Arts is an international academy focusing on fine arts – the only one of its kind in Finland. It offers first-class instruction in Moving Image, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Site and situation specific art and Sculpture, and is a pioneer in artistic research. The Academy was founded in 1848 by a private foundation. In 1998 the Academy received a university status. The studies leading to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are organised in degree programmes. The programmes focus on specific disciplines of fine arts requiring artistic talent and expertise and seek to develop these further. The doctoral studies at the Academy emphasise artistic work of high quality and artistic research in an associated field. The number of students is ca 270. Full-time teachers are all practising artists of repute; in addition, a number of teachers and lecturers work on hourly basis. In addition, the Academy annually invites dozens of visiting lecturers and welcomes a number of foreign artists from all over the world to meet and work with its students. The Academy of Fine Arts has been part of the University of the Arts Helsinki since 2013, along with the Sibelius Academy and Theatre Academy.
