The company was founded in 1955 by a group of British cable manufacturers as African telephone Cables. Its factory and head office in Brits, was established in 1973. ATC installed the first optical fibre cable plant in Africa in 1982. CBi Electric Aberdare ATC Telecom Cables was formed in 2007 when Allied Electronics Corporation (ALTRON) and Reunert Ltd, both listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, formed a joint venture by combining their communication cable manufacturing operations into one entity, located at Brits in the North West Province, Republic of South Africa.
