Our Food 1200 / Ein Bwyd 1200
www.ourfood1200.walesOur Food 1200 aims to create a network of small-scale regenerative growers serving local communities. In total it is looking for 1200 acres across Monmouthshire and the Brecon Beacons. That’s all it would take to produce enough seasonal fruit and veg for every household in the region. Our Food 1200 is a community development society led by a local board of Director. Its creation was facilitated by the Conservation Farming Trust. Our Food 1200 is seeking land, through lease from farmers and landowners, or through community purchase. It is seeking people who can work this land. It is working to support those people with housing, start-up finance and local support. Demand for local food exceeds supply at present. Modern small-farm regenerative horticulture for local markets is an approach to farming that puts more back into the environment and society than it takes out. It is profitablem, creates jobs (1 per acre), produces a lot of food in a small area (a football pitch provides for 80 families), produces fresh healthy food, reduces food miles, and fixes carbon in the soil. Selling locally keeps money in the local economy, builds community among farmers and other residents, and creates the supply chains that all farmers can use.
