Sahara Conservation

www.saharaconservation.org

Sahara Conservation is an international NGO created in 2004 incorporated in the USA in 2007 and in France in 2016. Sahara Conservation was established to address the largely ignored and catastrophic wave of extinction threatening the large bird and mammal fauna in Africa. Many species were threatened with extinction, several of them occupying less than 5% of their former ranges due largely to decades of overhunting. One antelope, the iconic scimitar-horned oryx, was already extinct in the wild. Others, like the addax antelope and the dama gazelle, were reduced to the last few hundred individuals. For almost two decades, Sahara Conservation has worked to champion the unique wildlife of the world’s greatest desert landscape. Our mission is to preserve the wildlife, habitats and other natural resources of the Sahara and its bordering Sahelian grasslands. Through partnerships, key investments, and platforms that continue to promote collaboration and greater visibility in this region, we believe we have a major role to play in advocating, raising awareness, and promoting biodiversity conservation and values at all levels of society.
