Veterans, particularly those who have most recently served in the Iraqi and Afghan wars, are hit hard by a challenging economy and fragile employment market with unemployment figures ranging for 12.1 to 29.3%. Recent attention and authorization by Congress has provided over $ 20B in post 9/11 GI Bill funding to more than 759,000 people and their education institutions. Yet VA and Department of Defense were provided directives to undertake measures to “stop deceptive and misleading” promotional efforts that target the GI Bill educational benefits of Service members, Veterans, and eligible family members and survivors. Beyond opportunities for employment and education, Veterans need assistance from resources and our nation's leaders to bridge the civilian-military divide. A sense of community, compassion and brotherhood can help remove an "epidemic of disconnect" between civilians and the military. Facilitating these communities and channels between services providers and veterans is essential to successful reintegration. Our Flagship program, Hire A Hero; an online job board and employment resources, has been recognized by both Time Magazine, for being the top 21 ways to “Fix America” and Infoworld Magazine as one of the top 100 websites in the world for creative and effective merging of business and technical solutions for veterans. The Hire A Hero community has 337,000 registered members and seen 1.2 Million unique visitors to www.hireahero.org last year.
