Since its founding in 1958, Sequoyah School has been committed to an education that "challenges the mind, nurtures the heart, and celebrates human dignity." We are an independent, all gender, K-12 day school in Pasadena, CA where students thrive in a diverse community, are appreciated for their individuality, and find joy in a progressive approach to learning. Sequoyah’s curriculum emphasizes deep understanding of concepts, application, and mastery of skills through experiential and project-based learning in mixed-age classes. Teaching and learning are developmentally paced and nurture students’ social and emotional growth alongside their academic progress, where students take an active role in their learning process and assessment. Faculty and staff at Sequoyah work together to develop a collaborative culture that values multiple perspectives to broaden understanding, address challenges, and identify opportunities in and outside of the classroom. Teachers possess the expertise to develop curriculum and to apply strategies that foster critical and creative thinking, inquiry, and ownership. They are encouraged to bring their talents and interests into the classroom to personalize their teaching, with growth supported through professional development and faculty education opportunities. The Sequoyah School community honors and reflects the multifaceted diversity of Southern California. Our student, family, and employee populations represent a diversity of ethnic backgrounds, identities, socioeconomic positions, and cultural experiences. Our namesake, Sequoyah, was a distinguished Cherokee leader who developed a syllabary for his people's unwritten language. The naming of the school reflects the love of books, reading, and stewardship that is at the heart of a Sequoyah School education. For Admissions inquiries, please visit www.meetsequoyahschool.org.
