Westwind Stewardship Group
www.westwind.orgWestwind is a 529 acre independent non-profit camp, farm and wilderness area set in the middle of the 10,000+ acre Cascade Head UN Biosphere Reserve in Oregon. In addition to operating its traditional summer “Camp Westwind,” Westwind hosts the Northwest Outdoor Science School in the spring and fall, rentals on available weekends, and various workshops, events and volunteer programs throughout the year. Originally founded in 1936 by the YWCA of Greater Portland, Westwind has welcomed over 100,000 campers, students, families and others to its incomparable site, and continues to welcome over 6,000 people a year for camp, outdoor school and other transformative overnight experiences, as well as 600+ others for day programs and visits. Equally important to Westwind’s impact on youth and families is its impact on the natural world: Westwind promotes its mission through conservation, sustainable practices, and a focus on environmental education. Following its original 360 acre purchase (including the current camp area by the sea), Westwind purchased over 4oo additional acres, conserved 270 acres of wetlands through sale to the U.S. Forest Service, and in 2006 secured a permanent conservation easement with the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB), forever conserving the remaining 529 acres owned by Westwind as camp, farm and wilderness. From solar energy to composting - Westwind truly lives within its values and hopes to inspire others to become environmental stewards of the earth.
