SAPIENTIA College of Theology of Religious Orders (Sapientia Szerzetesi Hittudományi Főiskola)

The Sapientia College of Theology, Budapest, is a joint institution of three religious orders with great tradition in the Catholic Church. The Benedictines (OSB), the Friars Minor (OFM) and Piarists (SchP) have had a centuries-long history of theological training in Hungary. In 1998 they decided to merge their Colleges and to found what was to be called the Sapientia. For this reason, the Sapientia College has two aspects: on one hand, it is a young and dynamic academic community, and on the other, it has a vivid tradition of the Catholic faith and a theological heritage drawing from the various spiritualities lived out in the state of the consecrated life. The College has 375 students, attending courses in philosophy, theology, and pedagogy in order to become priests, or teachers of religious education. We offer a BA degree (catechist/pastoral assistant), and various MA degrees: theology, teacher of religious education, teacher of family and child protection, teacher of ethics. The Sapientia is affiliated to the Pontificio Ateneo Sant`Anselmo in Rome, so those who graduate with us with an MA in theology may have their degree acknowledged by Sant`Anselmo as an ecclesiastic baccalaurate. All of our degrees are recognized by the State. In the framework of the Socrates/Erasmus project of the European Union our students may obtain a scholarship to widen their horizons by studying abroad. As a „College of Theology of Religious Orders”, the Sapientia tries to follow the special dynamics of religious life that for 2000 years has been raising dedication and commitment among the followers of our „Lord Jesus Christ, that for your sake he became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Cor 8:9).
