Providing IT to startups and small companies offered me a perspective not usually found in larger companies. Companies with large IT staffs tend to form isolated silos with limited perspectives or opportunities to learn and grow. Lack of IT resources required that I learn, understand and manage multiple facets of IT. My real world experiences covered the gamut from hands on, front line, end user and system support to strategic planning and preparing recommendations for executive briefings. I became comfortable in either setting. That experience provided me with a solid understanding of the IT problems faced by emerging companies and offered me an opportunity to learn the technology needed and skills necessary to provide solutions for those problems. That experience also permitted me to witness the transition of IT from a mere afterthought to being recognized as a major business component.
