Between 2004 and 2011 Seaway Marine Transport operated the largest fleet of Canadian registered gearless and self-unloading bulk carriers within the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River and Eastern Canada region. Seaway Marine Transport was a partnership of Algoma Central Corporation and Upper Lakes Group Inc., and was the leader in the North American domestic shipping market with 185 years of combined ship owning and operating experience. In 2011, Algoma Central Corporation acquired its partner's interest in Seaway Marine and purchased Upper Lake's 11 bulk freighters.
