National Economic Education Delegation (NEED)

Vision One day, the public discussion of policy issues will be grounded in an accurate perception of the underlying economic principles and data. Mission NEED unites the skills and knowledge of a vast network of professional economists to promote understanding of the economics of policy issues in the United States. Building Economic Policy Literacy The National Economic Education Delegation (NEED) is an educational non-profit committed to empowering voters and future voters by giving them the information they need to critically evaluate and respond to economic claims at both the microeconomic and macroeconomic levels. NEED provides a vital service by dispelling the many shaky economic narratives heard in policy debates and elsewhere that bear little relationship to reality. NEED offers a platform through which recognized professional economists collaborate to create and deliver presentations that reflect consensus understanding on a variety of policy issues and that provide a discussion of alternative perspectives where it does not. These presentations are designed for a wide variety of audiences: political leaders and governmental staff, trade unions, labor unions, business associations, local service organizations, and classrooms and university campuses. These presentations are not political, but provide insight into the economics underlying a variety of policy issues. What NEED will do is give individuals access to the data and information necessary to understand the tradeoffs inherent in today’s pressing economic policy questions. NEED currently has a network of more than 237 Ph.D. economists nationwide and 30 more internationally who are available to reach out to the public on a variety of important policy topics: climate change, international trade, health care, minimum wages, tax cuts, among others. These delegates are supported by an Honorary Board of 35 notable economists, including 2 Nobel Prize winners and 3 former chairs of the Council of Economic Advisers (under Clinton, Bush, and Obama).
