LabGEA was founded in November 2009 by Professor Anna Virginia Muniz Machado, DSc in Civil Engineering (UFF), member of the Board of Directors of ABES (Brazilian Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering) and representative of the Research and Learning segment in the Sanitation and Water for All network. Since its inception, LabGEA has been acting as a research and extension focus for students of Environmental, Civil, Chemical engineering and other undergraduate courses at Universidade Federal Fluminense with interest in the area of water resources management, especially regarding the universalization of access to water, in particular, SDG6 "Water and Sanitation for All" and the community water management strategy in rural communities. LabGEA frequently participates in technical events (National Meeting of Community Water Management I and II, Rio Water Week), presents papers in Congresses (Urbenviron International Seminar on Environmental Planning and Management, GRAPHICA, SEMEXT) and has its work published in annals of area events and magazines (Water, 2019)
