The AFAD is one of the biggest and oldest Slovak institutions devoted to the university education in various artistic programmes. Throughout its long history, the AFAD reflected all the historical changes or political ideologies, but it has always remained committed to its progressive nature. Nowadays, a great deal of its performance is focused on artistic and scientific-research activities, as well as on emerging international cooperation within the European education, art and research area. The Academy has already established itself as an institution with a strong position among art schools in the Central European region, and at the same time, it is continually strengthening its position within the European Union. The AFAD offers the possibility to pursue studies at all three levels in programmes such as Fine Arts, Design, Architecture, and Restoration, as well as the Theory and History of Art and Architecture on master or doctoral level. It is not divided into faculties, but into twelve Departments and the Division of Drawing. Thanks to the opportunity to move among different departments and studios, the students acquire numerous and diversified experience from various fields which they can subsequently apply to their projects. This organization structure enables the Academy to be a flexible. as well as open educational platform and to create an interdisciplinary environment where the future artists are not limited by a lack of professional skills. The AFAD aims to strengthen creative and critical thinking, to support independent artistic and scientific research and artistic creation, as well as to encourage creative spirit. It strives to attract quality artists, theoreticians and socially and culturally active professionals who think differently, so the school is shaped by a plurality of opinions driven by intellectual vigour.
