Mulilo is the largest South African owned renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) and is targeting at least 20% of the country’s renewable energy market. Formed in 2008 when the local renewable energy industry was emerging, Mulilo saw the opportunities arising from excellent natural resources and a robust legislative framework based on policy certainty and government support. Mulilo acts as the primary project interface, coordinating all development works required for the construction and operations of utility scale renewable power plants. Mulilo has been appointed Preferred Bidder on eight utility scale renewable energy projects in South Africa’s REIPP Program representing over 450 MW of renewable energy generation capacity. Two solar projects were awarded in Bid Window 1, namely 10 MW Mulilo Renewable Energy Solar PV De Aar and the 20 MW Mulilo Renewable Energy Solar PV Prieska rated both of which have been in operations since mid-2014. In Bid Window 3, Mulilo was awarded Preferred Bidder on a further two 75 MW solar PV projects, namely Mulilo Prieska PV and Mulilo Sonnedix Prieska PV, both of which were commissioned in mid-2016. In Addition to the solar portfolio, Mulilo has also been successful in the wind sector where two wind farms in De Aar, namely Mulilo De Aar Maanhenberg 100MW and Mulilo De Aar 2 North 140MW, both began commercial operations in October 2017. A further two 5 MW of Solar PV projects, Du Plessis Solar PV4 and Augrabies Solar PV1 have been awarded Preferred Bidder as part of the Small Projects IPP program but are currently awaiting clarity from government as to financial close. Mulilo has developed a substantial pipeline of projects representing over 2 GW of solar and 1.5 GW of wind projects which will ensure it is well positioned to continue its steady growth. Mulilo’s project mix ensures short-term feasibility and optimizes long-term opportunities, taking into account specific local constraints and opportunities.
