Kóokay Contemporary ArtCrafts

www.kookayartcrafts.com

Kóokay is the Mayan word for firefly. Why firefly? Because we want our furniture to enlighten the room where you will exhibit and enjoy them. Kóokay is a 100% Mexican enterprise that showcases magical Mexican artcrafts combined with functionality and style. We work with local craftspeople, mostly women, empowering and helping them to become an independent workforce to build up their communities. Applying our 30-year experience in Design, we carefully plan each piece to make it a one and only, unique piece that will lighten up any room and transport you to another place and time. Staying true to our values and commitment to our indigenous people, we want to share our centuries-old traditions with the whole world. We believe in the beauty and high quality of our artcrafts, reasons enough to be well known around the globe. All our pieces are created with embroidery made with the famous “telar de cintura” or “backstrap weaving” which is used in the making of traditional Mayan textile crafts. Because the width of the weave is determined by the width of the weaver's waist, pieces may vary between 45 and 65 cms., a critical factor that greatly influences in the design of our furniture. Our designs need to work around these measurements and careful thought is needed to make the most of the beautiful weave.
