UBC Young Women for STEM
ubcywfs.wordpress.comWho are we? We are a group of female UBC undergraduate students from different scientific fields committed to being role models for the next generation and to making a difference in our community. Our main goal is to reduce the gender gap in science by inspiring more young girls to pursue careers in the sciences. What do we do? - High School Presentations: We visit high schools in Metro Vancouver and the Okanagan to present to classes. Our presentations consist of short talks by members about their fields, path to STEM and UBC, research, university experience, and future career goals, as well as one or two hands-on activities or demonstrations. - Women and STEM Conference: We organize an annual conference focusing on the role of women in STEM fields in the past, present, and future. We have invited speakers who are working professionals in STEM fields, as well as presentations by members of the UBC Young Women for Science. Topics have included the stigma and bias women face when pursuing careers in STEM, how the gender gap in STEM can be addressed, and how women in the past and present make a positive impact on the world through STEM. - Social Events: We have extra events during the year to socialize, become more connected as a group, and have fun!
