TexPower is a startup company spun out of the University of Texas at Austin in early 2019. We aim to commercialize the world’s first cobalt-free, high-energy, drop-in cathode materials for lithium-ion battery (LIB) manufacturers across the U.S. and beyond. Our cathodes can replace commercial battery cathodes “Powder for Powder”, and thus are extremely flexible for any battery form factor and are applicable wherever portable power is required. This means our products can be deployed in portable electronics, electric vehicles, drones, robots, and more. Our cathodes are comprised of abundant and affordable metals and are synthesized through standard, scalable industrial manufacturing processes. In addition, our products offer a win-win value proposition enabling at least 10% higher energy density, 25% lower raw material costs, increased sustainability, and a more secure and politically benign battery supply chain. This cost-benefit can become larger in the coming decade as demand for cobalt continues to grow rapidly with surging global electric vehicle production, possibly outstripping cobalt supply. With China’s ongoing efforts to lock up much of the worldwide cobalt supply chain, TexPower’s cobalt-free cathodes offer security benefits for U.S. military battery applications.
