Why install a fire sprinkler system? The "Sprinklers & Buildings Regulations" cover all requirements when it comes to fire safety in domestic and residential dwellings. Installing fire sprinklers, designed and installed to BS9251, is one of the easiest and most effective ways of meeting these regulations. There are a variety of applications that are often accepted by building control officers for when fire sprinklers are required. These include: 1) Fire brigade access Building regulations state fire brigade appliances must be sited within 45m of a domestic or residential property and the access roadways must be wide enough and have suitable turning circles available. Development on land, not meeting these requirements, will only be allowed where fire sprinklers have been installed. 2) Open stairways Stairways open to ground floor living areas from second floor accommodation, accepted when fire sprinklers have been installed. 3) Alternative means of escape Where there is an occupied space over 7.5m, a secondary means of escape is required. This requirement can be waived with the installation of a fire sprinkler system throughout. 4) Inner rooms Inner rooms opening out to an open-plan living space are not acceptable under the guidance, but will be allowed with the installation of a fire sprinkler, or fire suppression, system.
