WRH; Workers Row House
www.corktownexperience.comThe Workers’ Row House (WRH) is an historic restoration and preservation project to honor and disseminate knowledge of the trials and triumphs of the unheralded immigrant families who, soon after arriving in Corktown beginning in 1834, built one of the oldest surviving communities in Detroit today. This two-story, wooden-frame, three-unit, row house was built in 1849. Located within walking distance of shipyards, factories and foundries, it housed numerous laborers-carpenters, bakers, seamstresses, and rail workers through the mid -20th century. Records show that at times as many as 12 renters were packed into each of the units, which measure about 560 square feet. Their toil made the city a showcase for the dignity of labor, just as it allowed them the living wage that afforded them home ownership. Our dream is to refurbish the Workers Row House into a cultural center and community hub that the entire Corktown community can use for performances, meetings and events. by appointment only! and through our Corktown Experience tours; https://www.corktownexperience.com/ corktownworkersrowhouse@gmail.com
