Artists4MentalHealth, a NP corporation in NJ
www.artists4mentalhealth.comartists4mentalheatlh was formed in 1985 by a group of professionals including librarians at Passaic County College in Paterson NJ. It received its non-profit corporation status on October 27, 1987 with the help of pro bono attorney Sandra Robinson. It has always been run by volunteers. Its principal founder was Danielle Rubel, then working as curator at the College, whose daughter was expelled from her dance class when her MD put her on the drug Thorazine. which disfigured her and caused involuntary movements of her limbs. Desiree would cross highway by foot to go to her class. Unfortunately, the dance director would call the police and have her sent to the hospital. Artists for mental health is open currently for several new board members with an interest in the arts and mental health. It is also searching for a professional fund-raiser. Any one may become a member, and membership due is still $25/year. Its new goal is to debunk the idea that psychiatric drugs are miracle drugs and that they can correct imbalances. They may be helpful in extreme cases, but ultimately they destroy lives, terminating career dreams, talent in the art of science and destroying individuals who might otherwise have immensely contributed to society and culture.
