www.wilhelmexner.orgSince 1921, the Austrian Trade Association (ÖGV) has awarded the Wilhelm Exner Medal, named after the Austrian Economic and Technical Supporter. In 100 years, (today) 241 scientists and inventors, including 23 Nobel laureates, have been awarded this prestigious medal. The diverse research results of the laureates are characterized by a relationship to entrepreneurial practice, because they formed growth and are the fundament of industry and commerce. They therefore fully correspond to the principles advocated by Wilhelm Exner. Wilhelm Exner (1840-1931) always considered the radical changes in the economic and social framework that took place during his time as a great opportunity and aimed to offensively and constructively deal with the problems that arose. Exner represented the cosmopolitan Austrian liberalism, which instead of foreclosure and enemy images its commitment to modernization and transformation of the economy, science and society began. Throughout his long career, he has taken a variety of crucial initiatives and has taken on key roles in the economy and the industry. His sustainable work were never characterized by pessimism, but by a strong desire for modernization. He was rector of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, initiator of the Technologisches Gewerbemuseum (TGM) , spiritus rector of Vienna Museum of Science and technology (TMW) or Technical Test Office (TÜV). These personality characteristics of Wilhelm Exner can also be found in the basic features of many Wilhelm-Exner medalists. Laureates include a variety outstanding physicists, chemists, mathematicians, machine builders, physicians and biologists, as well as ingenious inventors and designers, many of whom have won international awards for their scientific prizes and honors. The selection of the personalities to be honored takes place at the suggestion and advice of those already awarded and is confirmed by the scientific board of the foundation.
