SELF - Special Education Leader Fellowship
www.selfnola.orgFacing both persistent special educator attrition and a widening gap in achievement between students with disabilities and their general education peers, the Special Education Leader Fellowship (SELF) was founded in New Orleans in 2015 to build special education leaders’ expertise to ensure all students, regardless of academic ability or race, can receive an excellent education in public schools. SELF has grown from an organization focused solely on training special education leaders to one offering targeted training for teachers, leaders, and school leadership teams in service of our mission to empower schools to be welcoming and effective communities for ALL students by developing the capacity of educators through coaching, guidance in systems development, and collaborative training. Our theory of change is that highly trained and supported special education leaders and teachers will guide strong teams to close achievement gaps for students with disabilities and will increase teacher and leader retention, mitigating teacher shortages. Our work includes an emphasis on recruiting, retaining, and advancing educators of color within special education as students of color are often overrepresented in school-based special education programs. Our network of fellows and alumni extends across 74% of New Orleans schools and includes an increasing number of participants outside of Orleans Parish.
