Village of Key Biscayne
www.keybiscayne.fl.govThe Village of Key Biscayne, incorporated on June 18, 1991, is located in the center 1.25 square miles of a four-mile-long, two-mile-wide barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. The Village is bordered to the north by Miami-Dade County's Crandon Park and to the south by Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. The island is connected via causeway and bridges to the City of Miami on the mainland, approximately seven miles away. Incorporation of the Village resulted in the first new municipality in Miami-Dade County in more than fifty years. Islanders fought for local control over future development, retention of more tax monies and improved public safety. The Village has its own Police and Fire Rescue departments and the lowest tax rate of any municipality in the County. Development of residential, commercial and resort properties since incorporation has changed the formerly laid-back character of the community with a snowbird population to an upscale, international flavor. Key Biscayne is now a sophisticated bedroom community of Miami with a diverse population of old-timers, business leaders, professionals and part-time as well as full-time Latin-American/European residents.
