www.iim-india.net

The Indian Institute of Metals was conceived in 1946 and inaugurated in December 1947 in Kolkata aiming, among other things, to be an authentic source of technical information for the benefit of industries and government. It has substantially grown since then, having 56 chapters and 10000 members, and now encompasses expertise from the academia, R&D, industries and the Government. The institute works through its divisions called Ferrous Metallurgy, Non-Ferrous Metallurgy and Metal Sciences, each headed by a Vice President, and addresses the entire value chain of metallurgy from mineral beneficiation to finishing. Recently, the institute has incorporated ‘New Materials’ and ‘Metallurgical Manufacturing’ in its agenda as well. IIM activities are multi-fold: it organises national and international events, publishes a technical journal called Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals, publishes a monthly house magazine called IIM Metal News and also publishes books for the specialists as well as for the students through Springer Nature Publications. It conducts examinations in metallurgical engineering and awards the successful candidates the Associated Membership of the Institute. It started offering short courses to working professionals. It has created the Swarna Jayanti Endowment Fund which partially supports travel for students attending conferences, and there is an exchange lecturership program with ASM International. It is now in the process of setting up collaborations with international metallurgical and materials related professional associations with broader scope. All this could be done because of the collective leadership and participation of industry leaders, heads of R&D institutes and senior academics of repute. It aspires to execute the following: - Training and reskilling for industry through courses - Conducting specialty workshops on emerging topics for academia and R&D - Creation of relevant databases - Student activities & Status papers
