Literacy Aotearoa
www.literacy.org.nzLiteracy Aotearoa has a history of advocating the right of all New Zealanders to be literate; recognising Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the framework that informs how we can address the inequities of education for all New Zealanders, and particularly for te Iwi Māori and Tangata Pasifika, as our Pacific nation’s whānau. Literacy Aotearoa has two principles that form the basis of all its activities. These principles and their processes give expression to the kaupapa and mission statement of the organisation. There is a broader understanding and meaning of literacy within the principles and processes, where literacy refers to the development of literacy in Māori, English, New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and mother tongue. Literacy Aotearoa will honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi* by operating in accordance with Tino Rangatiratanga and guided by Manaaki Tangata. Literacy Aotearoa is established to develop, promote and deliver accessible, quality literacy services designed to ensure the peoples of Aotearoa are critically literate and able to realise their full social, cultural and economic potential.
