Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawke’s Bay is a youth mentoring programme which has been operating worldwide for over 100 years, and in Hawke’s Bay since 2006. There are many children in Hawke’s Bay who, for one reason or another, find it difficult to cope with what life throws at them. We’re not talking about children who are particularly troublesome at school or at home, we’re talking about kids who fly under the radar for most of the time and therefore get very little attention from anyone. Mentors are adults 18 + from all walks of life who volunteer one hour a week of their time to form friendships with our tamariki (aged 6 to 12), and help them discover a world of possibilities and opportunities. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentor and the mentee, that is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced case-workers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee. A Big Brother or Big Sister: ~ Provides a role model and a friend for young people. ~ Promotes the importance of school and healthy relationships with family ~ There is no more important investment we as individuals can make than in helping our community’s tamariki realise, and share, their full potential.
